The Jewish Сommunity of Estonia expresses sincere condolence in connection with the passing away of the famous scientist Isidor Levin.
Isidor Levin died in St. Petersburg on July 27 after a long illness.
This was was an extraordinary person, a man of incredible fate.
Being a student of the University of Tartu, in 1941 he was rescued from the Nazis by Professor Uku Masing and his wife Eha. Later these people received the title of “Righteous Among the World” at Yad Vashem Memorial Center (Israel).
Isidor Levin was the guest of honour at the opening of the Memory Gallery by invitation of the Jewish Community of Estonia. As part of this visit, he met with the members of the Community and shared his thoughts and views, which made it a very interesting, emotional and bright moment. Community newspaper Hashahar published a series of articles about this visit.
We will always remember Isidor Levin in his thoughts, judgments and life postulates.
May the memory of this righteous man be a blessing!

Everyone is welcome to the biggest museum party in Estonia! Yom Hazikaron laShoah ve-laG’vurah (יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה; “Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day”), known colloquially in Israel and abroad as Yom HaShoah (יום השואה) and in English as Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Holocaust Day, is observed as Israel’s day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, and for the Jewish resistance in that period. In Israel, it is a national memorial day. The first official commemorations took place in 1951, and the observance of the day was anchored in a law passed by the Knesset in 1959. It is held on the 27th of Nisan (April/May), unless the 27th would be adjacent to the Jewish Sabbath, in which case the date is shifted by a day.
Memorial evening of Mark Rybak
On the 6th of March, Mark Rybak has left his life after a serious prolonged illness. He did not live out just two days before his 73rd birthday. On the 15th of March a memorable evening was held in the Jewish Community of Estonia, commemorating this remarkable man, to whom the Community owes a great deal, primarily the creation of the Jewish Museum.
A lot has been said about the contribution of Mark to the life of our Community and to the creation of the Museum.
For the creation of the Jewish Museum Mark was awarded with the Order of the White Star by the President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves.
“A clever, energetic, charming, extremely witty and at the same time vulnerable and modest person has left us. He made an unusually much for the preservation of the memory of Estonian Jewry. We will miss Mark very much”.

On March, 16 at 20:00 and on March, 18 at 13:45 the channel ETV 2 will present documentary and feature film directed by Anat Zalmanson-Kuznetsov about the attempted hijack of the plane to escape to Israel in 1970 – “Operation Wedding”.
***
Leningrad, 1970. A group of young Soviet Jews who were denied exit visas, plots to hijack an empty plane and escape the USSR.
It started as a fantasy, Operation “Wedding”; under the disguise of a trip to a local wedding, the “hijackers” would buy every ticket on a 12-seater plane. so there would be no passengers but them. The group’s pilot would take over the controls and fly the 16 runaways into the sky, over the Soviet border, on to Sweden, bound for Israel.
Seized by the KGB just a few steps from boarding, they were subjected to a chilling show trial, while the whole world watched.
45 years later, filmmaker Anat Zalmanson-Kuznetsov reveals the compelling story of her parents, leaders of the group, “heroes” in the West but “terrorists” in Russia, even today.
Cigarettes and vodka fuel interviews with the parents filled with intelligence and humor. Archives, reenactments and interviews with KGB officers enhance this inspiring story of young Jews who imagined freedom and cracked the Iron Curtain.

LAUNCHING TODAY — The Global Campaign for International Holocaust Remembrance Day. YOU can be a part of it.
Please watch, join, and share. #WeRemember
New York − The World Jewish Congress (WJC), the leading international organization representing more than 100 diverse Jewish communities on six continents, has launched its second annual #WeRemember initiative to combat anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred, genocide and xenophobia.
“Around the world today, anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial, and hatred of others continue to rear their ugly heads. We must remember because there are fewer and fewer survivors among us, and within just a few decades, all will have passed. We must remember because ‘never again’ seems to happen again and again,” said World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder. “It is now the responsibility of the younger generation to teach their friends about the horrors of hatred, and to spread the message that never again must mean never again.”
As part of the campaign, the WJC is reaching out to millions of people across the globe to photograph themselves holding a #WeRemember sign, and post the image to social media, to help spread the message as widely as possible. More than 250 million people were reached in 2017 campaign, with participants including heads of state, celebrities and average people from around the world. This year, the WJC hopes to reach 500 million people.
Lauder said: “We launched the inaugural We Remember campaign last year with the goal of symbolically reaching six million people as a meaningful way to remember our past while also protecting our future. In today’s digital age, social media is the only tool that can allow us to connect the world together with this message. The initiative far exceeded our expectations and became more than just a campaign. It became a worldwide grassroots movement, of real people and real stories, shared from the heart.”
The campaign will run through International Holocaust Remembrance Day at the end of January, culminating with a live projection of all participant photos, interviews with Holocaust survivors, and messages from influencers from varied backgrounds, professions, ages and religions on the grounds of Auschwitz-Birkenau January 24-27. Campaign materials will be translated into dozens of languages and posted on the WJC and partner channels throughout the month.
The goal of the campaign is to ask people around the world to do a simple yet meaningful task that would inspire conversation and help teach a new generation. Through multi-lingual videos and posts, the international community became aware of the campaign and started posting their pictures.
Those who spread the message in 2017 included Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu and President Rueven Rivlin, Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel, German Justice Minister Heiko Maas, US Senator Chuck Schumer, and Congressmen Jerrold Nadler and Eliot Engel, philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy, and unexpected supporters of all religions, political views, and backgrounds, including an Imam from France, the President of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, average citizens from Rwanda, Ghana, Morocco, Fiji, Uruguay, Chile, Latvia, Germany Kazakhstan, and Holocaust survivors themselves. Within just a few weeks the #WeRemember became the number one trending topic in Germany and other countries around the world.

The date of 19th of September is a memorial date. On this day, in the year 1944, the Klooga concentration camp was liberated. Unfortunately, on the day of liberation, one of the largest massacres of the German occupation in Estonia took place in Klooga. More than 2,000 prisoners were killed at the same time.
Speaker of the Parlament Eiki Nestor, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Estonia, schoolchildren and representatives of the Jewish Community of Estonia attended in the memorable event in Klooga today.
Each such date is a tragedy for our Community. It is very important to remember that. Never again…

The exhibition of works of the leather artist Zhanna Zhuravel was opened in the library of the Jewish Community of Estonia. The exhibits are extraordinary and wonderful. They were exhibited in many countries and got recognition all around.
Zhanna Zhuravel graduated from the Estonian State Art Institute in 1987, (diploma cum laude). Her works have been exhibited in many countries: Italy, France, England, Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg), Lithuania and Estonia. At the international exhibition in France in 2007, Zhanna received the “Audience Choice Award” and took the 7th place with the work of “The Tales of Ch. Perrault”.
In 2011, for the anniversary of Shakespeare in Oxford (England) from Estonia was represented Zhanna work “Romeo and Juliet.”
At the exhibition in the Library you can see surprisingly interesting executed covers of the books of Mayakovsky, Blok, Pushkin, Kaplinsky.
An interesting fact, in the year 2002, during the visit to Estonia, Bill Clinton bought the work of Zhanna. A jewelry box as a gift to his daughter, made of leather with a figure of a female between two male faces was sold to him in the gallery on Lühike Jalg street.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Rahumäe Jewish Cemetery in Tallinn organized by Jewish Community of Estonia and Ministry of Education and Science. #weremember
Dear friends,
World Jewish Congress (WJC) invites Jewish communities to join in a powerful expression of our respect for history and faith in the future, in a way that has not been done before, to ensure that the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust are never forgotten.
WJC is launching the We Remember campaign in which they are asking millions of people to photograph themselves holding “We Remember” signs and then to upload these photos directly to Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram with the hashtag #WeRemember. You may also to email the image to weremember@wjc.org.
The purpose and reason: The number of Holocaust survivors and witnesses is decreasing. There are still genocides occurring all over the world. There are those who say that the Holocaust never happened. We need to educate the next generation.
The coordinator of this campaign is Sacha Dratwa sdratwa@wjcmail.org.
